How to Access Grindr

Step-by-step plan for getting back into Grindr when age checks, laws, or network filters lock you out.

Confirm the block reason​

Grindr throws similar error banners for different problems. Match yours to one of these cases:

  1. Age verification incomplete - you skipped or failed the FaceTec selfie/ID flow.
  2. Legal restrictions - you're signing in from the UK or a U.S. state with mandatory adult-age laws (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas).
  3. Network blocks - your workplace or other managed firewall blocks LGBTQ+ dating apps.
  4. Account review - repeated reports, chargebacks, or policy violations triggered manual review.

Grindr recovery in four moves​

Finish official checks, clean stale sessions, then reroute traffic if needed.

  1. Grindr app (latest version)
  2. Government ID + selfie-ready camera
  3. Trusted VPN (NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN)
  4. Restart FaceTec

    Open Settings - Privacy - Age verification, follow the dot-tracking selfie prompts, and add ID if your region requires it.

  5. Clear sessions

    Log out of all devices, clear app cache/data, reboot your phone, and sign back in.

  6. Bypass regional blocks

    After passing verification, connect via VPN to a Grindr-friendly location (Ireland, Netherlands, California, Illinois) before reopening the app.

  7. Re-secure account

    Enable passcode or biometric lock, audit Active Sessions, and re-check subscription status (Plus/Unlimited) once back inside.

  8. Attach screenshots of error codes and verification receipts when contacting Grindr Support-evidence speeds escalation.

Method 1: FaceTec verification (mandatory)​

Grindr will not restore access until you complete FaceTec:

  • Hold the phone at eye level in bright, indirect light.
  • Follow the on-screen guide (look left/right, raise chin). Avoid hats, glasses, or filters.
  • If prompted, add ID photos with all four corners visible.
  • Wait for the confirmation email/SMS. You can monitor progress in Settings - Privacy.

If the app closes mid-scan, switch to Wi-Fi or mobile data, update to the latest build, and retry. Desktop emulators no longer bypass verification.

Suspended for age review?​

Use Grindr's verification form and upload the exact assets they request:

  • The email tied to your account (or device ID if you signed up with Apple, Google, or Facebook).
  • A selfie holding a sheet of paper with that email or device ID handwritten on it.
  • A selfie holding the government-issued ID that shows your birthdate.
  • A screenshot of the suspension banner.

Support deletes the ID document immediately after review and emails you once the suspension lifts. Check spam folders in case the confirmation lands there.

UK-specific age assurance​

Opening Grindr in the UK triggers FaceTec. You can finish the check with a video selfie or combine the selfie with an ID from the accepted list (passport, driver licence, residence permit, PASS proof-of-age card, British Army ID, Young Scot National Entitlement Card, Northern Ireland Electoral ID, United Nations refugee or driver ID). The process is one-time per account, but you must complete it before the app unlocks.

Method 2: VPN routing after compliance​

Once you've passed FaceTec, a VPN helps avoid location-based headaches while travelling:

  1. Install a reputable client (see VPN guide).
  2. Enable kill switch and DNS/IPv6 leak protection.
  3. Choose an endpoint in a region without strict age laws (Ireland, Germany, Canada, Mexico, California, Washington, Illinois).
  4. Clear app cache, force-close Grindr, connect the VPN, then relaunch.
  5. Keep the VPN on during use; disconnecting can re-trigger the age prompt mid-session.

Important: VPNs do not exempt you from legal verification requirements. Complete the official check first.

Safety reminders​

  • Delete selfie/ID files from your camera roll once verification succeeds, or store them in encrypted vaults for future rechecks.
  • Enable passcode lock and biometric authentication inside Grindr to keep chats safe if your phone is lost.
  • Keep alternative contact avenues (Twitter, Discord groups) to notify friends if you're locked out.
  • Log tickets at help.grindr.com with device model, OS version, app build number, and error ID to cut down on back-and-forth.
  • Follow organisations like the Free Speech Coalition or local LGBTQ+ advocacy groups so you know when new age laws roll out; being proactive prevents surprise locks.
