Definition​

A VPN extension is a browser add-on that proxies only browser traffic through the provider's encrypted network. It functions like a lightweight VPN client without installing system drivers.

Why it matters​

  • Zero admin rights: Works on locked-down machines (work laptops, school devices) where you cannot install apps.
  • Instant switching: Change servers per-tab to compare Stripchat regions or test mobile vs desktop flows.
  • Lower resource use: Consumes fewer CPU/RAM resources than full VPN clients, handy on older hardware.

Limitations​

  1. Only protects browser tabs - other apps continue to use your real IP.
  2. Many extensions use HTTPS proxies rather than full tunneling; they may lack kill switches or DNS leak protection.
  3. Always pair with the desktop client when uploading ID documents or streaming outside the browser.
